Art. Food. Antiques. Nature.
Our guesthouse resides in the heart of America’s coolest small town. Seriously. Located just off the historic Lincoln Highway, Mount Vernon is a colorful community home to destination restaurants, copious art galleries, a world class college, and more antique shops than you could shake a stick at. We are minutes from some of the most beautiful hiking in Iowa, located in Palisades- Kepler State park. We have destination food, a bustling main street and festivals nearly every weekend. We dare you to think of a reason not to fall in love.
We moved to this area because we thought there was something really interesting going on in the food scene. We were not wrong. Less than a mile from the bed & breakfast there are a plethora of options on main street, including Lincoln Wine Bar, that has the best pizza we’ve ever had outside of Italy. Seriously. Less than 15 miles down the road you will find, not one, but two James Beard nominated chefs, at Big Grove in Solon and Rapid Creek Cidery. We could go on, but maybe you should check it out yourself.
treat yo self
Mount Vernon is filled with things you don’t need but can’t live without, which is personally our favorite type of shopping. Grab a coffee at the legendary fuel and do a little browsing of all of the vintage finds. Head to Kae Apothecary for Saturday morning meditation and stock up on all things care for your mind, body and spirit. Maybe even pop into a yoga class at Brick House Yoga to find your OM. You can’t miss the beautiful things that come out of Iron Leaf Press, or the miles of antiques that wind through the First Street Community Center, an old school turned into a junkers’ paradise.
wine, beer and cocktails. oh my.
Eastern Iowa abounds with breweries, distilleries and wineries. A can’t miss on our list is Wilson’s Orchard, which produces hard cider like you’ve never tasted and includes a you-pick orchard from August- October. The iconic Cedar Ridge is 20 minutes away, while you are en route stop by Backpocket or one of the other numerous breweries popping up all around us. If you aren’t into the hard stuff, head to The Local, just down the street for some kombucha, made by Wild Culture in Iowa City that will make your tastebuds sing.
For a tiny town, there is a lot happening. Everyone we meet is an artist or writer and the main street is thriving with creativity. Buy some art for those bare walls at one of our 20+ art galleries. Take in a show produced by the Mount Vernon Community Theater or students at Cornell College. Attend a lecture. Read at writers’ night or take a painting class at Mount Vernon Creates. Attend one of our many festivals celebrating the arts, like Chalk the Walk, Mount Vernon Arts Festival or the Nitty Gritty Antique Crawl.
